FAS Manikin

fasmnikin.jpg (22841 bytes)Show young people how drinking alcohol during pregnancy can have lasting physical and mental effects on an infant.

Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of preventable mental disabilities. This manikin was designed with the help of a nurse/consultant who specializes in FAS education. The extremely detailed, lifelike sculpture was based on photos of real FAS infants. It represents a small-for-gestational-age full-term infant with facial deformities typical of cases of FAS. The manikin is available in two skin tones and is an anatomically correct female.

Drug Affected Demonstrator

drug-af.jpg (12575 bytes)The Drug-Affected Demonstrator is an effective in-class demonstration tool that shows how drug use during pregnancy can affect an infant. Small for its gestational age, the Drug-Affected Demonstrator is approximately 46cm long and weighs 1.5kg. It has many features that mimic those of a real drug-affected infant. These features include a high-pitched, warbled cry recorded from an actual drug-affected infant, tremors that cause the Demonstrator to tremble as if from drug withdrawal, and a detailed, lifelike appearance resembling a drug-affected infant with a painful facial expression and tiny limbs.

To demonstrate the realistic crying and tremors of a real drug-affected infant, the Demonstrator cries and trembles following a fixed schedule when activated. It always cries and trembles when first activated. From there, it pauses occasionally, and even trembles without crying. All of these features provide a powerful emotional impact to ensure lessons are remembered. No care giving by the student is required.

The Demonstrator is available in light and medium skin tones, and is an anatomically correct female.

New Features

On / Off switch
The easy-to-use switch located on the Demonstrator’s back allows the user to start and stop the crying and tremors, providing complete instructor control.

Improved battery installation
The Drug-Affected Demonstrator requires four AA batteries. They are easy to install using a standard battery holder included with the Demonstrator. The battery holder is secured in the Demonstrator’s back with a battery cover that easily clips on or off.

Low-battery indicator
For convenience, a low-battery indicator will notify the user when the Drug-Affected Demonstrator’s batteries are low.

Revised Program materials with updated drug-affected infant information
Program materials that come with the Drug-Affected Demonstrator include general information on drug-affected infant health symptoms, child development, environmental issues, and national statistics. Supplementary class discussion notes, student fact sheet, instructor answer guide, and operating instructions are also included.
